Manchester
Tameside eatery, The Pearl Restaurant has raised over £600.00
following a night of fundraising in aid of international humanitarian
charity - Action Against Hunger.
Hundreds of
regulars turned out to show their support over the weekend in a bid
to raise money for the charity which works in over 40 of the world's
poorest countries fighting hunger and malnutrition.
Fundraising
events included a 'curryaoke', which involved customers making a
donation for each song sung, a raffle to win prizes generously
donated by local Tameside businesses and a special appearance by a
local Clairvoyant who gave palm and tarot readings throughout the evening.
The
restaurant's raffle drew the biggest crowd as excited customers
bought lines of raffle tickets hoping to scoop the night's top prize
- a handyman for the day! Chris Rushworth of First Line Property
Repairs generously donated his services for free to one lucky winner.
Other raffle
prizes included a free haircut at local hair salon Saks, a free
beauty treatment at local beautician, Beauty Culture, a meal for two
at The Pearl Restaurant, and a pair of highly sought after tickets
for local rugby club, Aldwinians end of season, players dinner.
Diners were
also encouraged to make a donation to the charity at the end of the
meal, and the restaurant kindly donated a percentage of its overall
night's takings.
Based in
Ashton Under Lyne, the Pearl restaurant serves a unique range of
cuisine from across the Far East including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal,
Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Restaurant
Owner, Naheem Akhtar said: "We would like to extend our thanks
to all our customers for helping to make the evening a huge success.
The money raised will go towards saving the lives of thousands of
malnourished children and families across the world."
Pauline Llorca
from Action Against Hunger said: "The Restaurants Against Hunger
campaign works with restaurants across the UK who all have one thing
in common - a love of food. All funds raised will go directly towards
supporting people in need, making a lasting difference in their
lives. We are very grateful for The Pearl Restaurant's support."
Another
restaurant taking part in Kingfisher Curry Capital of Britain and
EthniCity 2006 was The Dhabba in Glasgow, a team member for the first
time this year.
On 7 May
Navdeep Basi's popular restaurant held a special charity night where
they offered to donate £10 per person for every booking. The
result was a fantastic cheque for £1000 to Action Against Hunger
which national organizers described as 'overwhelming'. Another team
member Siroosh Bavarsad's The Ashoka Flame added a further £70
to swell the total.
