Chefs To Battle For 'Chinese Masterchef' Title

Westminster City Council is calling on the city's finest chefs to display their culinary skills as it hosts the UK's only Chinese Masterchef event.

Entries to the competition, which is being judged by flamboyant celebrity chef Nancy Lam, closed on April 28.

It is being hosted for the third time by the council's Food Team - in partnership with the London Chinatown Chinese Association - to showcase Westminster, home of Chinatown, as the number one destination for oriental food in the UK.

Last year's winner, Alex Chow of Kai Mayfair, looks set to face stiff competition as any practising chefs in Westminster can try to scoop the coveted prize. In addition to the prestige associated with the title, the winner will be awarded £1,000. The second placed chef wins £500 and the third prize is £250.

The event, which is sponsored by Lee Kum Kee, Phoenix Rice, and the Learning and Skills Council, will be taking place at the Westminster Kingsway Catering College on May 23.

It is the only competition for Chinese chefs in the country and attracted 250 spectators last year.

John Barradell, Director of the council's Community Protection department, which includes the Food Team, said: "Chinese Masterchef is a glorious recognition of the contribution that Chinese cuisine makes to Westminster. The award is given to chefs who show good food hygiene skills and the expertise that separates excellent food from the merely good."

The day is open to residents and visitors alike. During the audience will have the opportunity to see the chefs cooking in the competition, demonstrations and a free lunch time buffet is provided.
