Mexican
Food Sales Continue To Grow
|
Britain's love
affair with spicy, flavoursome food continues to grow with new
consumer research suggesting that Mexican dishes are more popular
than ever.
The latest
figures from TNS Research show that when it comes to eating out,
Mexican food is growing four times faster than any other meal with
Chilli topping the growth table at 38% year-on-year increase.
Mexican also
enjoys the highest growth in pub food. It experienced a 42% growth
while the traditional "pie and a pint" meal fell by 6%.
Sales of pizzas, burgers and pork and lamb dishes also declined while
sales of ethnic and healthy foods rose. (Mexican and Vegetarian by
42% and Indian by 25%.)
As Mexican
food continues to grow in the eating out sector, British consumers
are also eating more Mexican food at home. Supermarket sales of
tortillas and Mexican sauces grew by 17% year-on-year as consumers
look for a healthier, more practical and more enjoyable meal
experience at home.
James Bennett,
head of marketing for Mexican food brand, Discovery Foods, said:
"Mexican at home is also the most likely meal to be eaten with
friends (more than twice as much as Indian, Chinese and Italian)
which is why the 'Cinco de Mayo' celebration is an ideal occasion to
treat family and friends to Mexican food."
'Cinco de
Mayo' (literally 'fifth of May' in Spanish) commemorates Mexico's
victory over the French in 1862 when a small, ill-equipped Mexican
army defeated invading troops from France in the Battle of Puebla.
Right across North and South America, the day is celebrated with
parades, music, dancing and eating and drinking.
James Bennett
added: "Discovery Foods' sauces and seasonings are based on
authentic Mexican recipes and are packed full of natural, flavoursome
ingredients. So people with an aversion to bland food can simply
season fresh meat, fish and/or vegetables with our sauces and
seasonings, heat up the frying pan and enjoy a sensational taste experience."
