Curry House's £30k Fine For Dirty Kitchen

A well-known Manchester restaurant chain has been fined £30,000 for five breaches of food safety law.

The Shere Khan branch, in the Trafford Centre, had an unclean floor and service area in the kitchen, unclean toilets and a lack of hot water for washing hands or materials, when an inspector visited in March 2005.

Fittings and equipment were also not clean or in good condition, causing a risk of contamination.

Owners Shere Khan Restaurants, pleaded guilty to five food hygiene offences at Trafford Magistrates Court. They were given a caution for food hygiene offences at the same outlet in 2002.

The company said in a statement: "None of its restaurants have ever previously been prosecuted for breach of health and hygiene regulations or have ever been the subject of any claims of food poisoning or other health risks.

"Shere Khan has undertaken a full refurbishment of its Trafford Centre restaurant, investing over £100,000 in brand new equipment and facilities. The manager, assistant manager and head chef were replaced last year."

Shere Khan has become one of the north west's most successful restaurant chains since opening its first outlet in Manchester's "curry mile" in Rusholme in 1987.
