Tiffin
Cup Goes To Wales
The first
awarding of the Tiffin Club's 'Tiffin Cup' went to a small restaurant
in Pembrokeshire last
Tuesday, 16th May.
The 2006 competition was organised by MPs Michael Frabricant, John
Barrett and Keith Vaz and 14 finalists nominated by their local MP,
gathered in House of Commons to convince the judges of the quality of
their food.
Understandably
the whole affair was a little chaotic as the session bell continually
went to call MPs to vote. Newly appointed Leader of the House Jack
Straw - inadvertently referred to as the Foreign Secretary! - popped
in to make the presentations only to disappear and not return,
leaving it to Keith Vaz to maintain momentum. |
The judges
included the irrepressible Ainsley Harriott, Lloyd Grossman, Nina
Wadia, Ranjit Mathrani of Masala World Group, Sanjay Anand of Madhus
and Enam Ali of Le Raj and they certainly looked to be flagging by
the time the fourteenth dish appeared on their groaning table served
by staff from top restaurants Madhus and Gaylord. A quick glance at
judges' scorecards suggested a level of enthusiasm for the food
rather less than hoped but Mr Vaz eventually declared how high the
standard had been. The finished dishes were certainly an achievement
for many of the chefs, who had to work in a space totally unsuited to
the numbers competing.

The winner by
some margin was declared to be the Taj Mahal from Preseli in
Pembrokeshire (pictured, right),
nominated by Stephen Crabb MP, with a prawn dish. Second was Royal
Alfaisal, the balti specialist from Birmingham and joint third were
B. Raj Tandoori from Fraserburgh and Bombay Spice from North London.
Bombay Dreams from Brent and Tandoori Parlour from Castle Point
received a judges commendation but there was, surprisingly, nothing
for top restaurant the Aagrah from Shipley, whose owner Mohammed
Aslam had lent his skills to support yet another competition. |

The real
winners of the evening were charities Roko Cancer Appeal who received
£1500 and TB Alert who received a much needed £500.
