Charan
Gill's £6000 Bar Bill |
 |
Buying
everyone in the bar a drink may be a traditional way for someone with
a reason to celebrate to indulge their sense of goodwill towards
their fellow man, but, on occasion, the celebrant can get carried
away by the generosity of spirit and wind up nursing a hangover - and
a hefty bar bill.
So it was with
Charan Gill, MBE, the former Curry King, who has just bought the
popular Quayside Restaurant & Leisure Centre at Fisherrow
Harbour, Musselburgh, and decided to celebrate his new ownership by
buying all the centre's members a drink in the bar.
|
But not only
did Charan forget just how many members the leisure centre had - 1200
and rising - but his generosity got the better of him and, instead of
buying members a free drink, he rather rashly escalated his offer to
a bottle of wine each.
Said Charan,
"I wanted all the centre's members to join in the celebrations
of the start of a new era for the facility, but I must admit that I
hadn't planned on being handed a £6000 bar bill! Nevertheless,
every penny of that bill is worth it if it lets our members know just
how much I appreciate their continued support for the leisure centre."
Indeed, Charan
is already planning other incentives to show his appreciation for the
loyalty members have shown to the club.
"We're
about to launch new menus for our restaurants," he said,
"and diners can rest assured that, despite being hit with a
£6000 bar bill, I intend to introduce various discounts and
special offers to our many regular customers. After all, it's our
members and customers who have made the Quayside the success that it
is - so it's only right that they should share in that success."
Formerly owned
by the Fisherrow and Musselburgh Co-operative Society, Charan Gill
bought the Quayside for an undisclosed seven figure sum last month,
safeguarding its future for the local community, together with its 40 jobs.
Recently
extended facilities already include a 20m leisure pool, spa, steam
room, sauna, crèche, treatment room, fully equipped air
conditioned gym and exercise studio. And with three function suites,
'The Quayside' offers excellent facilities for conferences, seminars,
training events and meetings for groups up to 200 people.
