Can any wine be called 'Cava'?

Historically, 'Cava' is the Spanish term for the wine cellars where winemakers keep their wines.
It has been adopted as the 'generic' name for high quality, stringently made sparkling wines from Spain. (In the same way, red wines from Bordeaux in France are called Claret)
