Cava with chocolate and cheeses? Winegrowers say 'have fun with food flavours!'

Cava Facts

What does 'Cava' mean?...

Can any wine be called 'Cava'?...

Why is Cava so diverse and varied?..

Is it all owned by giant corporations?..

What is it that makes the Penedés area of Catalonia so good at creating this sparkling wine?..

In Britain we love the 'fizz' of sparkling wines - and researchers say the market for sparkling wine is now showing increasing growth since 2003(this year by around 7% year on year... faster than champagne which is only growing at 4%) and is now worth an estimated £1.22 billion!.

Cava is our choice when we shop for 'fizz' (Cava dominates with around 38% while champagne is currently trailing with just 30% of retail sales) and the increased importance we place on lifestyle and our leisure time has buoyed demand - as has our greater familiarity with these wines.

But we there's a huge adventure still waiting for us say the Institut del Cava (the Cava industry body based in Catalonia) who predict that the sheer range and quality of the cava wines are now about to be discovered by wine enthusiasts. And the delicious way these diverse wines blend with food is still to be realised.

'Cava is as varied and diverse as you would expect any great wine to be, given its range of traditional and newer grape varieties, and the incredible climate and landscape the vines thrive in' says Maria del Mar of the Institut del Cava.

"The current trend in Catalonia is to enjoy Cavas of the style known as 'Brut Nature' as well as the popular 'Brut'. Brut Nature is a wine with no added sugar, and both are wonderful with country hams and flavoursome cheeses, as well (surprisingly!) as being delicious with sweeter autumn and Xmas foods like mince pies and preserved fruit - we believe some taste fantastic with dark chocolate!' she added.
