King Charan Gill MBE is set to go from Bhangra to ballroom this month
when he slips on his dancing shoes to take part in a special
Celebrity Come Dance With Me competition this month for charity.
The Secret Millionaire star will
join other stars from STV, BBC, Smooth Radio and Galaxy Radio on the
dance floor in the 'Strictly'-style dance-off to raise funds for the
Marie Curie Big Build Appeal.
Mr Gill said, "As a
singer with Bombay Talkie, I've always danced - but that was bhangra,
this is ballroom! That said, I'm sure I can sneak the odd bhangra
move into the foxtrot!
"I've always been a great
admirer of the support and care given by The Marie Curie Hospice in
Glasgow, which has served the needs of cancer patients for over 30
years. So when the opportunity arose to help, I jumped at the chance.
"The best way to ensure
that local people continue to enjoy the benefits provided by Marie
Curie is to build a new hospice. The Big Build Appeal needs to raise
£16.1million to build the hospice that Glasgow deserves. With a
modern layout, state-of-the-art facilities and set in beautiful
surroundings, Marie Curie we'll be able to provide even more care,
support, dignity and relief to patients than ever before - and I get
a chance to improve my dance moves!"
As well as Charan, the other
contestants are: comedian and Galaxy FM DJ Des Clarke; Vicky Lee,
presenter of STV's The Five Thirty Show: BBC weather presenter Judith
Ralston; Smooth Radio DJ Sharon Oakley and STV weatherman Sean Batty.
They will be judged by professional Latin and disco experts Agnes
Knox and Charlotte Comrie along with Rab C Nesbitt actor Tony Roper.
The Celebrity Come Dance With Me
competition is the main event at a black tie dinner and dance at
Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow on Saturday 30 May. Tickets are available
at £45 from www.ballroombasics.co.uk
or by phoning 07985 648 965.
Charan Gill is a former
shipbuilder who founded his Harlequin Leisure Group in Glasgow in
1994 and built it into Europe's largest chain of Indian restaurants
before selling it in a multi-million pound deal in 2005. Following
the sale of his restaurant empire, Charan's next move was to pen his
autobiography, 'Tikka Look at me Now', star in the hit Channel 4 TV
series The Secret Millionaire and to open Scotland House in Delhi.
