Jan - March British Food and Drink Trends Revealed by Directory Enquiry

New data has highlighted changes in Britons' eating and drinking habits across the start of 2009 according to 118 118 Directory Enquiries.

Overall, calls for restaurants fell 11% with marked variations between different types of food. Across January - March 2009, French, Thai and British Pub food all remained stable whereas interest other foods dropped considerably:

* Calls for Chinese restaurants decreased 18%

* Calls for Greek restaurants dropped 23%

* Calls for Indian restaurants fell 17%

* Calls for Mexican restaurants fell 30%

* Calls for Pizza restaurants dropped 32%

* Calls for Turkish restaurants down 21%

Calls for UK Takeaway staples also saw significant drops in calls. Calls for fish & chips decreased by 21% and pizza fell by 30% and although overall calls for takeaways have fallen by 22%, healthy eating is further off the menu due to its expense.

* Enquires around health food stores decreased by 34% since January 2009

* Calls for organic foods fell by 38%

* Calls for dieticians and nutritionists declined by 10%.

Nightlife has also clearly been hard hit by the recession, with calls for nightclubs decreasing 6%, calls for pubs and wine bars declined 17% and inquiries to karaoke bars fell by 13%. And Britons aren't increasing their domestic consumption to compensate - calls for off license also fell 10% across the period.

The number of restaurant insolvencies has grown by 70 per cent since the beginning of last year, as diners continue to opt for familiar branded restaurants when eating out. Statistics released recently by PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that 186 restaurant companies joined the insolvency register in Q1 of 2009 alone, a 30 per cent increase on Q4 of 2008 and a greater number than hotel and pub insolvencies combined.
