Patara Fine Thai Cuisine Launches Super Rice

With the popularity of Thai cuisine continuing to soar in the UK, the Harrods Food Halls have joined forces with the Royal Thai Embassy to showcase all the Thai essentials needed to create your favourite dishes at home for the month of May. Customers should look out for sought-after ingredients and store cupboard essentials.

The newest must have will be Patara's GABA rice.

Patara GABA rice is the new superfood, and is made up of 4 varieties of brown/unhusked rice that have been sprouted. Varieties include Muser Purple, Red Jasmine, Jasmine and Glutinous rice. Each variety is only planted once a year, and has been carefully selected for both its flavour, and health properties, which when blended together give a combination of high fibre, vitamins and essential amino acids.

Muser Purple Rice is an ancient rice variety native to the northern region of Thailand. It contains 3 times more Gamma-Oryzanol (which reduces cholesterol, stimulates insulin production and increases the release of Endorphins) than white rice.

Red Jasmine Rice is a rare grain that is found in Surin, a province in the East of Thailand situated along the Cambodian border. It is rich in fibre and B Vitamins.

Jasmine Rice is also referred to as "fragrant rice" due to its floral aroma and flavour. When cooked, this long-grain brown rice is distinguished by its moist and tender, slightly sticky texture. High in fibre.

Glutinous Rice contains negligible amounts of amylose, and high amounts of amylopectin. It is grown in Northern Thailand.

Already served at all of Patara's branches, this rice has a nutty flavour that is a cross between white and brown rice and a slightly chewy texture. It contains extremely high levels of a potent amino acid known as GABA.

GABA, more scientifically known as gamma amino butyric acid, is an amino acid found in plant products-including brown rice-that is an integral part of the human brain and nervous system.

In addition to inhibiting overexcitement and relieving stress and anxiety, GABA can reduce muscle tension and increase the release of Human Growth Hormone, which aids in fat reduction and muscle growth. It also may strengthen bones and maintain blood sugar levels, thus assisting weight control.

Patara GABA Rice (£10 for 1kg) will be available exclusively at Harrods for the duration of the Thai Promotion, and will then be available to purchase from Patara Restaurants in London.
