The UK South Asian Chef Competition

The ultimate challenge...

Aagrah Group of Restaurants, in association with The UK South Asian Chef Competition, recently announced the winner of the 2006 Competition following a glittering Awards Dinner in Bradford on Friday 03 November.

On Tuesday 13th June six simultaneous regional finals took place around the UK to determine the winner for each region. These finalists came together at Leeds Thomas Danby, West Yorkshire, where they did battle to determine the ultimate Winner of The UK South Asian Chef Competition 2006.

Later in the day the winner was announced at a glittering "Bollywood Theme" Charity Dinner; the competition contributed £20,000 towards the total of over £70,000 gross, raised for charity at the Aagrah Group of Restaurants 24th Annual Charity Dinner. After expenses it is expected this will generate in excess of £60,000 for good causes.

Standards were exceptionally high and the panel of distinguished judges, under the direction of Michael Quinn MBE and Cyrus Todiwala MBE, were most impressed with all those who participated:

Winner
Murray Mariappan, Head Chef, The Mango Tree Indian Restaurant & Bar, Stonnall, West Midlands

Second place
Mrs Kaushey Patel, Head Chef/Proprietor, Prashad Restaurant, Bradford

Third place
Stephen Duffy, Executive Chef, The Quay Hotel & Spa, Deganwy, Conwy, North Wales

Runners Up
Joe Pathak from The Fullarton Hotel Glasgow, Man Lung Lai from The Red Panda Restaurant in Belfast and Sharu Vinuchakravarthy from The Heathrow Sheraton Hotel; all demonstrated very high standards in cooking and presentation.

Everyone received a crystal trophy and a framed certificate. The winner took home a winner's trophy, a cheque for £1,000 and will receive full media exposure in the UK and Europe. The second and third places took home cheques for £500 and £250 respectively.

The competition has a charitable basis; all excess income over expenditure will be donated to nominated charities, including Hospitality Action Industry Benevolent Organisation, Bolling Special School, Bradford and the Al-Shifa Eye Hospital.
