Nuts About Naan, Crazy About Korma, Potty About Pilau?
The Army Benevolent Fund Needs You!

The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) is calling all curry lovers to get involved in its spicy fundraising initiative, the World's Biggest Curry Lunch (WBCL), which takes place in April 2008, to raise money for soldiers, former soldiers and their families in need.

The aim of World's Biggest Curry Lunch is to invite everyone across the UK to host a curry lunch or dinner for family, friends and colleagues, to raise vital funds for the ABF.

The ABF hopes that workers, catering colleges, and businesses across the UK will get involved and hold World's Biggest Curry Lunch events at their homes or staff restaurants, and donate the proceeds from the curry to the Army's national charity. The Army will be joining in, in garrisons and operational theatres across the world.

The ABF are encouraging participants to host their curry lunch during the week beginning 21st April 2008, but are happy for people to cook their curry at anytime during April as it's the taking part rather than the date that matters!

On 24 April 2008 the lead event for the World's Biggest Curry Lunch will be held at the Guildhall in London, the event will be hosted by the Lord Mayor of the City of London. It is anticipated that this huge event will involve over 1,000 invited guests from city businesses and Parliament.

The ABF is the army's national charity and has been providing financial and practical support to soldiers, former soldiers and their families for over 60 years. The charity is dependent on voluntary donations, and must currently raise over £5.5 million each year to continue its vital work with the Army family. The World's Biggest Curry Lunch was launched in the face of increasing demand for support from the Army, particularly in light of the number of recent operational casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The first year of the World's Biggest Curry Lunch was launched in February 2007 at The Royal Hospital Chelsea, and included a 'curry cook off' between Chef Alfred Prasad, Michelin star holder and head Chef at the Tamarind and Tim Harrington, head Chef at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The 2007 event raised an impressive £50,000 for the ABF, but it is anticipated that the 2008 event will be bigger, better and even hotter! All proceeds from the event will be used to fund the ABF's vital work, with needs ranging from funding care home costs for an elderly WW2 veteran to a much needed holiday for a war widow and her young children.

ABF Controller, Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter said: "April 2008 will be the second year of the World's Biggest Curry Lunch. Curry is a traditional dish of the British Army, but this fun and unique event is something that everyone can get involved in, whilst also supporting our soldiers, who need our help now more than ever. All people need to do to take part is to visit our website or contact us for their free fundraising and recipe pack".
