Numerous
celebrities, movers and shakers lit up the hottest event in
Scotland's social calendar at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on 1st
November at The Hottest Night of the Year, the legendary annual
celebration of all that's best in the worlds of showbiz, sport,
politics and business hosted by curry king Charan Gill, MBE.
Now in its
ninth year, the Hottest Night took its inspiration this year from
Diwali, or 'festival of lights', one of the most popular and eagerly
anticipated festivals in India.
Hottest Night
host Charan Gill said, "Symbolising the victory of good over
evil, during diwali, lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope
for humankind. There is a great spirit of charity associated with
Diwali, which is fitting as all the proceeds from the Hottest Night
this year went to The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow
and Help the Aged, India."
Indeed, some
600 guests raised over £150,000 - far and away its biggest sum
yet - for these charities on the night.
The evening
featured a spectacular blend of traditional Indian entertainment from
the Diwali Candle Dancers, comedy from star turn Rod Woodward and a
charity auction hosted by comic Andy Cameron.
Guests also
had an opportunity to participate in an appeal for people and
organisations to donate £1,000 to fund a water buffalo for a
dairy farm in Rajiana, a remote village of the Punjab, in India to
help provide free milk to 400 needy families every day. Anyone able
to make such a donation was invited to choose the name of the buffalo
that they provided.
During the
course of the evening, all guests had the chance to bid for a range
of valuable, exclusive prizes in the famous charity auction. Amongst
the top prizes this year were: ownership of a fabulous Rolls Royce
Phantom for the weekend, including meals for two at Piccolo Mondo and
Gandolfi Fish and two nights at Hilton Glasgow; an opportunity to
date Miss Scotland at one of the Ashoka restaurants in Glasgow; a
trip in a hot air balloon with a bottle of champagne thrown in for
good measure - or even the chance to hire your own private
investigator for the day!
