Wealthy Brick Lane 'Curry King'

Attacked By Street Gang

One of Brick Lane's wealthiest 'curry kings' and leading Tory in London's East End was beaten unconscious in a street attack recently.

Muquim Ahmed was smashed around the head as he walked between two of his restaurants in Spitalfields.

The 53-year-old businessman who hopes to run for Parliament was punched and kicked by four men on October 29, shortly after locking up his popular Café Naz restaurant, police confirmed. He was taken unconscious to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and kept in overnight.

Police are looking at whether the attack may have been related to a business dispute in Brick Lane.

Mr Ahmed is one of the Conservatives' most influential figures in Tower Hamlets and is the current favourite to become the party's Parliamentary candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow (George Galloway's present constituency) at the next General Election.

His Cafe Naz was wrecked in 1999 by a nail bomb planted by racist David Copeland who was later jailed.
