Spice Master Restaurant at The Pink Cottage, Commonside Road, Harlow, held a fundraising dinner on Friday 24th October for the Princess Alexandra NHS Trust Breast Care Unit.

The dinner was attended by Mrs Philippa Dooher, Lead Breast Care Specialist Nurse, and Mrs Janet Skeys, Service Manager, both based at the Epping Breast Unit, who have worked with the unit's Associate Specialist Mr Ashraf Patel, for over 20 years.

Cabaret was provided by the attractive and talented duo Abba Divine - Miranda Richards as Agnetha and Zoe Edgar as Frida, dressed in authentic glamorous costumes, who sang and danced their way through many of ABBA's chart hits in a sparkling one and a half hour disco-lit show. Diners' reaction was highly enthusiastic, with an all-girl birthday party taking to the circular dance floor in a sashaying line; other couples disco-dancing.

A raffle was held to help raise money for the Breast Care Unit. Mr Ashraf Patel provided two pairs of Bollywood-Themed Dinner & Dance Tickets at the Manor of Groves Hotel & Golf Club on 14th November, each pair of tickets worth £100, which were won by friends Mr Roger Smith of Lodge Hall and Mr Tony Mackenzie of Hallingbury. Other prizes included a Spice Master Dinner for Two worth £50, a Laithwaites Wine Voucher worth £50, a Revlon 3-piece red faux crocodile Vanity Set worth £30, and a case of Cobra Beer worth £25. The total raised from the raffle and a donation from Spice Master, despite the present credit crunch, was £200.

Epping Breast Unit is part of The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust and is based at St. Margaret's Hospital, Epping. The unit was one of the first hospitals to commence the NHS Breast Screening Programme and continues to screen the local population of West Essex.

The many dedicated and highly specialist professionals involved in the service support several thousand women and men a year who have been referred by their GP. The number of breast cancers diagnosed during the year 2007/08 totalled 270.

Fundraising events and donations received by the department allow the team to provide additional care and treatment, ensuring that patients can access the care they require close to home. Recent examples of where money has been spent include the introduction of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy aided by a Research Sister employed to co-ordinate the programme, and a wide selection of clinical trials led by Research Nurses.
