DENHAY CHEDDAR A WORLD WINNER

Denhay's award winning Mature Farmhouse Cheddar has won The Best Mature Traditional Cheddar category at the World Cheese Awards 2009. In a hard fought competition which included over 2,400 different cheeses from 34 countries, Denhay's Cheddar, a cheese made by hand in the Marshwood Vale , Dorset, caught the eye of the international panel of cheese experts.

Made using only milk produced by Denhay's five herds which graze the Marshwood Vale, the winning Mature Farmhouse Cheddar is an example of time honoured cheese making skills coupled with high animal welfare.

A total of 2,400 cheeses were tasted over two days at the World Cheese Awards which this year took place in Gran Canaria. The final supreme panel of 12 cheese experts was headed up by Nigel Barden, known for his food contribution on the Chris Evans' show on Radio 2.

Denhay's Farmhouse Cheddar has been made at Denhay Farms since 1959 using traditional skills and methods that have been at the heart of cheese making in the West Country for many generations - the traditional rinded cheddar is a 27kg cylinder truckle which is cloth wrapped and turned many times during the maturing period to give the cheese it distinctive flavour and texture.

Commenting on the Award, Amanda Streatfeild of Denhay said; "We are always thrilled to win awards for our cheeses and to win the trophy for the Best Mature Traditional Cheddar at the World Cheese Awards when our cheese was amongst the best in the world, is certainly brilliant news for everyone at Denhay. Cheese making is central to life on the farm at Denhay and so this Award is extremely important to us and our team - we couldn't be more pleased."

Denhay also won two silver and two bronze awards in other cheddar categories at The World Cheese Awards. Denhay Mature Farmhouse Cheddar is available from Waitrose, farm shops, delis, dairy shops and good food retailers.
