THE AKASH IN WELLINGBOROUGH CELEBRATES ITS ANNIVERSARY
Wellingborough's longest serving Indian restaurant celebrated 30
years of successful trading on Monday 2nd November.
The Akash on Cambridge Street opened to the public in 1979 and over
the years it has welcomed thousands of local people as well as those
that have travelled from abroad to sample the tandoori cuisine. Among
those that have eaten at the restaurant include; snooker champion
Peter Ebdon; Pakistan international cricketers Ahmed Shehzad and
Younis Ahmend. The restaurant has also welcomed a member of royalty,
Commonwealth Secretary Shiridath Rampal as well as The Bishop of
Peterborough, Durham and Hong Kong.
Since day one, the Akash has been co-owned and managed by Mr Mohi
Choudhury who has been in the restaurant business for nearly forty
years, having previously worked in London. Mr Choudhury has survived
two recessions and is currently surviving its third, which he
believes is due to offering affordable and high quality food. He
said: "We have built a wonderfully loyal customer base by simply
offering a good product and service. We have listened to our
customers' thoughts and suggestions and make every effort to bring
them what they want."
One of Akash's regular customers is a wealthy businessman that lives
in Tenerife who once paid for a large takeaway to be flown out to the
Canary Island. He has been visiting the Akash for over 20 years and
still does to this day.
One of the key factors to Akash's success is the consistency of food,
which is, and has since opening, been created by head chef and co-owner
Mr Rahman. He and his team have prepared thousands of dishes and the
most popular being chicken tikka massala.
The 30th anniversary celebration was attended by the Mayor of
Wellingborough and a selection of local dignitaries.
Mr Choudhury added: "It has been a pleasure to work in
Wellingborough and meet such lovely people. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank each of my customers for their continued support
and I hope we can continue serving Wellingborough for another 30 years."
