A
Moment Of Brilliance
A hesitant
step forward, arm outstretched towards the glittering prize; a
tentative almost agonised smile; tears forming and finally the
broken-voiced thanks to all assembled.
It was the
moment repeated so many times in Oscars, Baftas and the like, but
this one was rather special. The occasion was the 3rd annual British
Curry Awards in the Great Room at Park Lane's Grosvenor House.
Britain's expert spoon thrower Chris Tarrant, no stranger to the odd
curry, was on hand to lead the guests through a glittering evening of
dance, magic and award-giving as restaurateur after restaurateur wove
through the tightly-packed tables to mount the stage and accept their
prize beneath the glaring spotlights.
Watching on
benignly was Enam Ali, founder of the Awards, surrounded by his young
family and then came that special moment. The category was "Best
Restaurant in the London Suburbs" and the judges had
shortlisted 16 restaurants to fight it out for the title. Guests
watched as they were taken through a brief video of the contenders
and then Chris announced the winner - "...and the winner is
the Brilliant in Southall".
A
bewildered-looking Dipna Anand stood up from her table and walked in
a daze towards the stage. Behind her came her father and well-known
restaurateur Gulu Anand, who started the restaurant with his brother
no less than 32 years ago, his face glowing with pride.
With her award
clasped firmly in her hand Dipna leaned forward to thank those
assembled for the honour and the tears formed and voice cracked. The
watching Enam Ali smiled, father-like, and murmured "this is
what I wanted - this makes it all worthwhile". Multi award
winning Gulu Anand described the award as "the greatest honour
he has ever received" and the guests applauded that honour to a man.
Over 1200
people from all over Britain attended the star-studded night
dedicated to Britain's favourite cuisine. Gulu Anand had almost not
been one of them due to a function elsewhere but his daughter
insisted and won as usual. Within moments of accepting the trophy
they were on the phone to their staff to spread the glad tidings and
the promise of a celebration that would last into the early hours.
