Politicians Beware

If you are a politician - beware. Do not say yes to an invitation to a function and then get caught with a dish of a totally different kind.

This was the crime committed by high profile Labour MP Keith Vaz according to a report in The Evening Standard recently. Mr Vaz had been invited to Enam Ali's glittering British Curry Awards at London's Grosvenor House and had accepted. Master of Ceremonies Chris Tarrant had already called on MPs Dominic Grieve and Chris Grayling to present awards but when he called on Mr Vaz the guests had to sit through several minutes of uncomfortable, even embarrassing, silence before it was realised the Leicester MP was not even in the building.

The general opinion was that he had "bottled it" after hearing of the welcome video produced by Opposition Leader David Cameron and the repeated call from Mr Ali for Government understanding over the knotty problem of restaurant staffing. Few present could have guessed, however, that he was missing out on one hot dish to enjoy another, according to The Standard.

One official comment from a spokesman for Mr Vaz apparently said he was preparing for an important Select Home Affairs Committee meeting whilst another said he had attended the awards for the past 3 years (there have only been 2 previous awards ceremonies) and felt he should stand aside for other MPs. According to The Standard, he was actually spotted in an "international fast food restaurant" with Bollywood beauty Shilpa Shetty.

So politicians beware - curry may be very enjoyable and even healthy for the rest of us but for the unwary politician, ignoring the call of curry could seriously injure their career!
