Record Industry Support For Seafood Week

Seafood Week 2007 is set to be a major success with organisers, Seafish, reporting the best ever industry support since the campaign started in 2000.

Businesses from across the whole seafood industry have signed up, joining a long list of chefs and celebrities, keen to pledge their support for the week, which runs from 5-12 October.

The theme for this year's Seafood Week is 'celebrating the seafood industry in the UK'. Each day will see a different aspect of the industry highlighted on www.seafish.org/2aweek. There will also be daily celebrity recipes and top tips showing how easy it can be to eat the recommended two portions a week and encouraging consumers to buy seafood from sustainable sources.

A host of celebrities and chefs have added their names to the list of supporters including; Nell McAndrew, Gabby Logan, Annabel Karmel, Aldo Zilli, Mitch Tonks, Antony Worrall Thompson, Anton Mosimann, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Rick Stein.

The list of organisations participating in Seafood Week is growing daily as the launch on 5 October approaches. ASDA, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose, the five Seafood Week supermarket partners, are all holding promotions throughout their UK stores including tastings and special events.

Other regional and national businesses, including Young's, Lyons Seafood, Fishworks, Whitby Seafoods and Nobilo Wines are also getting involved by creating special promotional material or hosting events, tastings and offers, designed to remind customers of the wide variety of seafood available in the UK and the benefits of eating '2 a week.'

Young's has been a Seafood Week supporter for many years. Marketing director Yvonne Adam said: "We are using our ambassador, Mitch Tonks and development chef, Serge Nollent to host a virtual cookery demonstration showing people just how easy it can be to cook seafood and enjoy it twice a week.

"It's important that the processing, retailing and food service sectors work together to remind consumers of the excellent practices and fantastic people involved in the industry and Seafood Week provides a superb opportunity to do this."

Clare Griffiths,VP brand marketing, Constellation said: "Seafood Week gives us the ideal platform to promote how perfectly Nobilo wine complements seafood. We are delighted to be able to support such a major event in the industry calendar and, at the same time, remind customers how delicious seafood can be."

Independent fishmongers, fryers and retailers are also signing up for Seafood Week 2007. Alastair Horabin is owner of Seniors Fish Experience, a fish and chip shop and restaurant in Thornton. He said: "We always take part in Seafood Week. This year we are aiming to visit over 1000 school children, to teach them about the provenance of the seafood we serve in our shops and the importance of sustainability."

Nikki Hawkins, Seafish account manager, said: "I have been involved with Seafood Week for the past five years and every year I am delighted and encouraged by the support and enthusiasm of the industry. We have some excellent events and offers lined up across the country - consumers are in for a real treat."

There is still plenty of time to sign up for Seafood Week. Log onto www.seafish.org/2aweek and register what you are doing. Toolkits featuring PR advice and downloadable posters and leaflets are also available from the Seafish website.
