"A Seafood Festival separates the good restaurants from the
ordinary&ldots;" says the special Festival menu at Sesame
Restaurant on Kingston Road in New Malden and the success of their
first Festival offering certainly separates this restaurant from most
of the others in the area.
Running from 21 September to 18 October, the Seafood Festival offers
diners a special menu for both Indian and Thai cuisine to run
alongside their normal menu for the two cuisines in an atmosphere of
comfortable luxury and thoughtful service.
The Thai menu looked very interesting with its Seafood Tom Yum and
Grilled King Fish but we decided to go for the Indian menu and
started with Sesame Fish Finger - lighly spiced tilapia marinated
with egg white, lemon juice, salt mustard sauce, pepper and dill and
coated with sesame seeds to give that added crunch - and Fried
Kalamari, often so disappointing but in this instance, cooked to
perfection with a seafood-style sauce.
Having enjoyed the thousand-boned Hilsa a few days before, this time
I went for the Seafood Platter (£11.95) with its fish kebab,
king prawn, squid, salmon and tilapia tikka roasted in the tandoor,
an excellent way to enjoy the variety on offer accompanied by a very
pleasant Chenin Blanc. My partner tucked into Mahi Kaliya - salmon
tikka cooked with black pepper and served with tossed almond flache
and fresh broccoli and coriander which provided an excellent, zingy
accompaniment to the tender salmon.
Britain is not particularly known as a fish nation in restaurant
terms but with quality dishes such as those offered by Sesame, many
diners may soon be going for the healthy alternatives to their
chicken tikka masala, and if Sesame carries on in this direction it
could well become the popular destination restaurant it presently deserves.
