The
Tabasco® British Oyster Opening Championship kicked off to a
flying start with a record 16 competitors battling it out for the
British title.
Franco's
Restaurant of Jermyn Street was celebrating as first place was
awarded to Frederik Lindfors who managed to open 30 oysters in an
astonishing time of 3 mins 37 seconds. Frederik is no stranger to the
event; he came very close to winning last year's competition and in
2001 he was not only crowned British Champion but went on to win the
International Championship in Galway.
Frederik will
be competing in Galway once again later this month, hoping to take
back the International title and beat off professional shuckers from
all corners of the world.
The
Tabasco® Championship becomes increasingly popular each year and
the 'shucking' standard keeps getting higher. This year saw the 2005
winner - Sam Tamsanguan from Wilton's take second place while 3rd
place was given to new contender Mike Dawson from West Mersea Oyster
suppliers and 4th was another new competitor, Paco Escabar from
Selfridges Oyster Bar. Times were closer than ever this year and the
judges stressed that presentation was spectacular.
Guests
ventured into the spirit of the occasion and celebrated the start of
the native oyster season in style with copious quantities of Laurent
- Perrier Champagne, oysters and of course Tabasco® Pepper Sauce.
