Bistro & International Tapas Bar on Old Fishmarket Close in the
heart of Edinburgh's Old Town have added Locusts and Crickets to
their ever expanding exotic meats menu this summer in celebration of
Edinburgh's International Festival. The delicacies will be served on
a bed of lettuce or with Asian vegetables.
Reportedly
there are 1,462 recorded species of edible insects in the world with
insects being on par with shellfish in providing high-quality protein
and a good source of other nutrients such as iron, calcium and B
vitamins. Eating insects is a custom widely practised around the
world, Locusts are a common human food source in Algeria and in
Nigeria, roast termites and crickets is a popular choice. Crickets
can be an excellent and healthy alternative to meat, 100g of crickets
contains 12g of protein and only 5.5g of fat.

Edinburgh's old town was the first Edinburgh restaurant to serve
Rattle Snake and due to its popularity with the customers the snake
became a permanent fixture as a special on the menu. Shaws Bistro has

Ostrich, Buffalo, Zebra and the even more unusual Crocodile steak
which is served with lemon and cracked black pepper. Shaws believe it
