We claim to
be a nation of foodies and budding chefs, but a survey conducted by
Veetee Dine In has revealed it's actually the real kitchen basics
we're struggling with.
Rice seems to
be the prime culprit with well over half the nation (68%) admitting
they can't get it right, with the results being over-cooked and
mushy, under cooked and hard or the quantities all wrong. Another 35%
of respondents claimed to be flummoxed by boiling an egg. As a result
of this, half of those questioned admitted to using ready meals at
least twice a week.
A lack of
skills is becoming evident especially with men - despite their gender
dominating the celebrity chef world - nearly half (47%) admit to
cheating to impress a woman, often serving supermarket meals or
take-aways, passing them off as home-made on a first date!
As a result of
our failings in the kitchen we are now relying more than ever on
ready meals - 71% use them regularly, compared to only 20% of our
parents generation. With more us of relying on instant methods, this
has had a knock-on effect on the time we spend in the kitchen - two
thirds (68%) spend less than 30 minutes - compared to 74% of our
parents who slogged away for up to an hour each evening.
And
strapped-for-time cooks can't even focus their full attention on
preparing a meal, a whopping 65% have to multi-task in the evening -
splitting their culinary skills with sorting the laundry, putting the
children to bed, tidying the house, opening the post or even feeding
the cat!
Additional
Key Findings:
- 68% readily
admit to overcooking rice so it's mushy, undercooking it or preparing
too much
- London
residents are having the most problems cooking rice, closely followed
by Scots and those in the east of England
- In terms of
age groups it seems 35 - 55 yrs olds are the most rice challenged
- 15% of
people in Northern Ireland don't event attempt the feat of cooking an
evening meal because the basics are putting them off.
Changes in
lifestyle habits has led to an explosion in the availability of
quality ready meals - addressing a concern of over half of those
questioned. The Veetee Dine In range offers shoppers exceptional,
restaurant quality rice for the first time ever from the microwave in
just two minutes. There is no longer an excuse to serve up gloopy,
unappealing rice or stress about the basics - all the hard work has
been done for you.
Moni Varma,
Chairman of Veetee comments: "Like the people surveyed, I
can't cook at all - so much so that my wife has banned me from the
kitchen! She for one is pleased that we've come up with this product!"
