London 'is costliest city in world for dining out'

London has overtaken Tokyo and Paris to become the most expensive city in the world in which to dine. The capital has for the first time topped the rankings in the Zagat survey, the restaurant guide that reviews establishments in 85 different cities around the world.

The average cost of dinner, with one drink and service, climbed 2.9 per cent to £39.09 - double to cost of a similar meal in Los Angeles, which will set you back a mere £15.63. Prices at London's top end restaurants have climbed even steeper, by 6.1 per cent - twice the rate of inflation - to hit £87.90.

Tim Zagat, the co-founder of the guides, said: "It came as a shock to me as I had always thought that the Japanese cities of Osaka and Tokyo, as well as Paris, were the priciest. But I guess the cost of everything in London has gone up so much recently."

Mr Zagat said it was intriguing that the city's most expensive restaurant - Gordon Ramsay's flagship establishment in Chelsea - had lost the top slot for food, to Chez Bruce, "where the food is half the price". Mr Zagat ranks the restaurants by asking 5,300 readers review all the places they have eaten at over the last year.

Chez Bruce, in Wandsworth, was described as "reliably fantastic". The restaurant charges £37.50 for three courses. L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon won best newcomer, and the fast-food noodle chain Wagamama won most popular.
