ROAST restaurant now part of Celia Brooks Brown's Borough Market Gastrotours

To provide: "a unique foodie experience"

Food writer and TV chef, Celia Brooks Brown, operates a series of "Gastrotours", which provide an insider's view of London's vibrant culinary hotspots. Friday mornings from 10 a.m. at Borough Market now feature an "elevenses" spread at Roast to start the tour, which moves on to include exclusive food and wine tastings, as well as meetings with the passionate purveyors of the market's artisan foods, with expert foodie Celia at the helm. Her Friday afternoon tour at 4pm offers the same gourmet experience, instead finishing at Roast with wine and oysters.

Borough Market celebrated its 250th anniversary last year, though it's actually been thriving since before Roman times. After nearly closing down in the late 1990s, the last seven years have seen its remarkable revival as a gourmet food retail market on Fridays and Saturdays. Roast restaurant is the second of Iqbal Wahhab's burgeoning restaurant empire, perched above the market in the picturesque Floral Hall. The morning tour begins in the restaurant with a spread of classic British elevenses fare using ingredients sourced from the market where possible, including pigs-in-blankets, pikelets with rhubarb jam, Welsh rabbit, teas, coffee and juice. Here Celia tells the story the market's fascinating history. The group then launches into the market for a line-up of tastings, including scallops, superfood juices, rare breed meats, fine cheeses, olive oils, and teas. There is a tutored wine tasting at Bedale's with a spread of French delicacies, and the day concludes with a spread of simple tapas combinations at at Brindisa Spanish Foods. The 4pm tour concludes with wine and oysters in the lounge bar at Roast replacing elevenses.

Celia says, "Borough Market is in constant flux and I'm always trying to refine and evolve my successful Gastrotours. Incorporating the luxurious surroundings at Roast with their delicious food sourced from the market is a fabulous new addition the day's format."

Roast founder Iqbal Wahhab says, "We are delighted to be teaming up with Celia on her Gastrotours as it helps build a closer connection between what we do at Roast and the producers in the market. We are all celebrating the best of seasonal British produce and this is a great way of knitting us all together."
