Charan Gill Helps Honest Lad and Lass Unveil Two New Suites at Official
Re-launch Party for The Quay Complex

Charan Gill MBE, together with this year's 'honest lad and lass', Robert Slight and Louise Nish, dressed in traditional costume, unveiled two refurbished function suites at the official re-launch party for The Quay Complex at Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh.

The two suites have been named 'Arthur' and 'Vass' in honour of the honest toun's very first honest lad and lass, Jimmie Arthur and Ina Vass. And to mark the special occasion, relatives of the first honest lad and lass were on hand to mark the occasion. Not only was Jimmie Arthur's widow Nettie Arthur invited, but Ina Vass's son, Douglas Naismith MP, and daughter Wendy Hourston was in attendance.

Mr Gill said, "It was only once I'd bought The Quay Complex in April that I became aware of Musselburgh's reputation as 'the honest toun' and its annual honest lad and lass celebrations. As The Quay Complex belongs to Musselburgh, I thought it would be a great idea to recognise the town's distinctive tradition by naming the suites after the first honest lad and lass."

The opening marked a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of The Quay Complex. It was last year when the Fisherrow and Musselburgh Co-operative Society concluded that the complex was placing an unsustainable drain on its resources and launched a nationwide search for a 'white knight' to take over the facility and safeguard its future for the local community.

That search ended in April when Gill bought the complex for £1.35 million. He has since invested some £750,000 in modernising the premises, upgrading its facilities and opening a new Indian restaurant called Chubara (Indian for 'penthouse'). The impact upon the Quay's financial position has been significant. Five months on, the complex is exceeding its sales targets and is on course to double its £1 million turnover within its first year under Gill's ownership.
