house owner, local JP and TV mogul Ahmed Chowdhury is using craftsmen
and artists from his native Bangladesh to work on the project at his
Rajpoot restaurant in Argyle Street.
When the facelift is complete at
the end of November, its capacity will increase by 80 to 160 seats
and there will be two different reception areas.
Mr Chowdhury, who opened the
restaurant 28 years ago, had acquired the sub-basement of a
neighbouring property. Building work started in early July and will
create a new section, with five separate dining areas.
Mr Chowdhury told Bath Chronicle
the expansion was the realisation of a six-year dream.
"My dream for this
expansion is coming true after six years. We are already one of the
country's premier restaurants. It will even be a more interesting
place when it is opened."
He added: "The
décor will be unparalleled; craftsmen and artists from
Bangladesh are working tirelessly. The atmosphere will be unique. The
famous Rajpoot kitchen will take on a new shape and, in addition to
its popular dishes, will introduce some unusual items."
The restaurant, named after a
warrior race in Northern India, offers tandoori, Mughlai and Bengali
dishes, and has won a string of national awards.
Mr Chowdhury is also director of
the British-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and founder of two
community centres in Bristol.
