Tossed - The Humble Salad Comes Of Age

Taking healthy eating to a whole new level, Tossed opens at Harrods102, across from the famous Harrods store, 102 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, SW1X 7ZY on Friday 5 September.

Another salad bar? Not quite. Turning over a new leaf, Tossed is at the forefront of a new generation of healthy eating venues, shaking up Knightsbridge with its upscale, quick casual food offer of salads as main meals, with a big emphasis on health and indulgence.

Tossed counts calories and nutritional content, ditches mayonnaise in favour of fat free yogurt to bind ingredients, uses low GI carbs, serves hand-made soups and makes smoothies that provide 100% of your daily fruit in one hit. It's just that you wouldn't know it, as everything tastes so good.

If healthy eating conjures up images of rice cakes and sunflower seeds, and the idea of salads stops at lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes, it's time to tuck into a freshly made salad packed with protein and hand tossed to order in one of 15 different dressings. Create your own salad from a choice of cold or hot bases, including salad leaves, cous cous, egg noodles or brown basmati rice, then choose your ingredients and dressing. The salad is then tossed in front of you.

Or choose one of 20 prepared house salads, freshly tossed when purchased. The Tossed Signature is packed with farm-assured chicken breast, mozzarella pearls, red grapes, apple, toasted cashews, sun-dried cranberries and is tossed with champagne raspberry dressing, yet it's just 435 calories. Nutritional information is displayed in-store, but you can also select the nutritional calculator at www.tosseduk.com to build your very own, calorie counted salad.

A foodies dream, the quality, presentation and creativity of Tossed's main meal salads is on a par with those found in restaurants. From roasted butternut squash to crayfish, sunblushed tomatoes and roast peppers, ingredients are simply succulent, bread is low in salt, low GI, never soggy, and sandwiches and wraps contain at least one portion of your daily fruit and vegetables. In a crowded market, to find food of this quality at £3.25 for a medium and £3.95 for a large salad (up to £4.95 for speciality salads) and £2.95 for a smoothie (all around 72 calories per 100 ml) is a bargain, but Tossed believes that healthy eating should be accessible to everyone.

By changing salads from their side dish status to 'big and tasty' main meals, low in fat and calories, Tossed is changing people's perception of what everyday healthy eating is all about, at a critical time when obesity in the UK has reached an all-time high.

Understanding that people want to eat healthily but want variety, beyond salads Tossed also offers home made wraps, hand-made soups, stews, bagels and wholemeal bloomers, plus several breakfast items, including good old fashioned porridge.

STORES

Tossed has injected an element of fun into its health offer, with a quirky decor and vibrant communication, such as the silhouettes of fresh ingredients resembling rolling hills to entice customers away from their busy, hectic lives and into the healthy, calm world of Tossed. The stores are fitted out to facilitate throughput and have a computerised ordering and payment system to speed up service, as well as providing an on-line order service and office delivery.

ETHICS

Company ethics are impressive too. Respect for the environment is core to Tossed, and packaging is currently 95% recyclable. Hot drinks, sugar and most snacks carry the FairTrade mark and food sourcing is carefully controlled. All the meat in the soups and stews is free range, chicken is farm assured and all eggs are free range.

HISTORY

The brainchild of the 'Salad Man', Vincent McKevitt spotted the gap in the market for filling, tasty, healthy food and salads. A business studies graduate, he went on to be picked as 'The One To Watch' in the Courvoisier Future 500 in January 2008.
