Curry King Charan Gill Commissions WEST Brewery to Develop Special Premium Lager Exclusive to New Slumdog Restaurant

Curry King Charan Gill MBE has commissioned Glasgow Green-based independent WEST Brewery to develop a special premium Slumdog lager to be available exclusively on draught at his new Slumdog restaurant, scheduled to open in Glasgow next month.

The deal marks a reunion between the renowned entrepreneur, who acted previously as a mentor to WEST owner Petra Wetzel 18 months ago when he assisted her in the rescue of the brewery from administration.

Since then, WEST has gone from strength to strength, picking up a string of awards for its unique range of lagers, whilst Mr Gill is set to open the doors to Slumdog, a pioneering new Indian restaurant that marks his return to Glasgow's culinary scene following his sale of the Harlequin Restaurant empire four years ago.

Mr Gill has already acquired the trademark to use the Slumdog brand for bars, restaurants and cafes as well as various types of foods and spices. He has now gone further and an application for Slumdog beers, wines and other drinks is pending.

Mr Gill said, "What attracted me to get involved with WEST Brewery in the first place was the fantastic quality of its product range. That's why I've now asked the brewery to develop a light and crisp lager, evocative of the kind of brew available on the back-streets of Mumbai, and I'm really looking forward to tasting Slumdog lager for the first time!"

Ms Wetzel said, "It's great to get a chance to work with Charan again, particularly on a project as exciting as Slumdog. We're currently busy in the brewery testing a range of recipes in a painstaking process of concocting a unique new lager with a taste that will leave you feeling like a millionaire!"

Located on the site of former pub The Sauchiehaugh at 410 Sauchiehall Street, Slumdog offers a relaxed and inviting bar/diner experience and, in addition to Slumdog lager, will stock a full range of Indian beers, wines and cocktails.

WEST, which brews the only lagers and wheat beers in the UK to meet the Reinheitsgebot of 1516 (the German Purity Law; the oldest food law in the world which ensures only the finest, purest beer is deemed fit for consumption) operates a full production brewery and is home to a stylish beer hall and restaurant with a beer garden overlooking Glasgow Green.
